Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar in which healthy/able adults and teenagers fast from food and drink during the daylight hours. Children usually partake in good deeds like donating used clothes, toys, and books to those in need. Fasting all month also has the effect of reminding us that there are always people in our own communities who do not have enough to eat.
This year the Lower School at Crossroads is celebrating Ramadan together by hosting a food drive. There will be collection boxes set up in each classroom between April 26- May 23. All the collected food will be donated to the Upper Valley Haven Food Shelf at the end of May, which coincides with the end of Ramadan Eid al-Fitr holiday.
The summer is a difficult time for the Food Shelf since it’s a low donation season and many children who rely on school lunches are home for the summer.
The next time you go grocery shopping (or check in your pantry) please keep in mind the following possible donations:
- Pasta
- Pasta Sauce
- Sun butter/Jams
- Canned fruit, vegetables, soups
- Cereal
- Easy to prepare meals for kids
- Any non-perishable foods
