Crossroads Academy fifth grader Caroline Warrington and fourth grader Max Melzer made their mark on the baseball diamond this spring and summer. They often teamed up as the “battery” for Dresden Baseball’s 10-win, 2-loss runner-up team in the Upper Valley Cal Ripken League, with Melzer pitching to Warrington at catcher. Both excelled in the regular season and earned distinction as All Stars, leading to further competition against the best players in the region.

Their All Star team rose to the occasion, capturing the Cal Ripken Vermont State Championship by winning five of six games and beating rival Norwich 10-5 in the championship. Across two games on the final day, Warrington delivered a key RBI double, while Melzer stood out at pitcher and catcher. Their magical season continued with a trip to the New England Regional tournament, where they competed with eight other state and district champions. In their final game, Warrington came up big with an RBI double and Melzer held down catcher as the Dresden All Stars nearly upset a strong Massachusetts team. Taking their Crossroads education into the world of sports, both kids exhibited the virtues of courage, diligence, and perseverance. Warrington furthermore showed courage and confidence as the only girl among 100-plus players; her strong play delivered a message to all of her peers not to place limiting beliefs on themselves and others.
