Last week our Middle School students traveled to the Hulbert Outdoor Center in Fairlee, Vermont for a three day retreat. This group bonding experience has been a tradition at Crossroads for years, and is a favorite memory to many Crossroads graduates. During the Hulbert days, our students are able to learn more about their peers, practice problem solving techniques, work as a team, and build close relationships with the Crossroads community.

For sixth graders, Hulbert is an introduction to peer expectations and is a wonderful chance to get to know older students and their new Middle School teachers. For seventh and eighth graders, the opportunities to practice leadership skills and model our Core Virtues are consistent throughout the retreat. “Having mixed grade level core groups was a welcome addition to this year’s experience,” said Middle School Division Head Holly Gardner. “The students enjoyed getting to know each other and developed relationships from the various team-building and problem-solving activities.”

The days consist of canoeing, archery, high ropes course, team-building activities, and wilderness skills. This year’s activities were chosen to help students build interpersonal skills that were affected by the current pandemic. Students met new friends and strengthened bonds with old friends. “Seeing students interact was such a joy,” said PE Teacher Matt McGuigan. “These interactions will carry into the year to create a positive atmosphere for our school year.” During team building activities, eighth grade students were able to step out of their comfort zone and develop leadership skills. Seventh and sixth grade students learned valuable lessons on challenge-by-choice on the high ropes course and practiced pushing themselves in order to achieve greater goals.

We’re happy to have our Middle School students back on campus after this exciting experience. We look forward to seeing their new skills shine in the Fanger Center!
