As part of one of their first history units, kindergartners have been learning about Indigenous people. Most recently, students have been focusing on the Abenaki tribes of the Northern region. To create an example of what life was like for our Native inhabitants, kindergarten students studied how to build a wigwam or a canoe using natural resources on our campus, and then put their knowledge to the test! The class ventured around the surrounding woods to hunt for resources that were found only on the forest floor. These materials were then used to build a craft that could float on a “lake.”

In small teams, our kindergarten students worked together to share thoughts and ideas, and problem solve what was possible with their limited materials. Through lots of creativity and trial and error, each team successfully created a device that could float on water! Much like our Native ancestors, our students learned to make the most of limited materials, seek a solution when faced with failure, and to think outside the box!
