Third graders recently celebrated the conclusion of their first Core Knowledge history unit on ancient Rome. They began the day by participating in an escape room activity. Students pretended that they were lost at the Colosseum and had to crack a code in order to get back to their tour group. The task was challenging but the third graders persevered! Afterwards, students learned about Roman numerals and made Roman legionaries. The main attraction was the Roman feast where students enjoyed roasted chicken, baked ziti, pesto tortellini, grapes, various cheeses, a fig spread, olives, and ended the meal with gelato. Due to a brief power outage, the fun continued into Friday. Students made bookmarks out of papyrus. They were introduced to the Latin alphabet and were asked to write their name in Latin on the papyrus. The festivities concluded with making Laurel Wreath crowns. It’s safe to say that fun was had by all! Next stop on our Core Knowledge journey… the Vikings!
