The Cohen Center of Keene State College serves as a research and resource center for the teaching of the Holocaust and genocide. The center also provides materials for educators at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. On an annual basis, the Cohen Center presents three awards: the Charles Hildebrandt Holocaust and Genocide Studies Award, the Susan J. Herman Award for Leadership in Holocaust and Genocide Awareness, and the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics. This year, three Crossroads Academy Middle School students shared the Charles Hildebrandt Holocaust and Genocide Studies Award: Maddie Kebalka, Henry Swan, and Caelan Vogel. The three students were recognized for their creative responses to Night, Elie Wiesel’s memoir. This text, taught in English 8 after the students have learned about the Holocaust in History 8, presents a powerful, firsthand description of life and death in Auscwitz, Birkenau, Buna, and Buchenwald.
