To kick off the year our school-wide art collaboration focused on a variety of contemporary artists who use the classic iconic crayon as their medium. Lower School students took inspiration from the book The Crayons Go Back to School by Drew Daywalt (Author) and Oliver Jeffers (Illustrator). Students were tasked to create an “All About Me” design in a crayon silhouette that incorporates their name or initials creatively into the design, include a Core Virtue word (or two) and highlight some areas that interest them by using text, graphics, shape, line, color, and pattern. As they were completed, each “crayon”  joined the box and was installed on the bulletin board here in Bancroft.

Middle school students also learned about the encaustic painting technique and explored it by creating mini-abstract designs using melted wax on canvas. We also kicked off the year by discussing our Hopes & Dreams and adorned “paint swatches” creatively for the new school year.

Below are a few artists that were highlighted to the students. These artists were chosen because of their wonderful connections to art, culture, science, math, and beyond. Along with their creative and unusual way they use crayons as their medium of choice!

  • Jeffrey Robert
  • Hoang Tran
  • Diem Chau
  • Herb Williams
  • Christian Faur
