Artwork from Crossroads Academy second grade students will be on display for the months of January and February in the Pediatrics Department waiting area at Dartmouth Health. The artwork was inspired by the story Pine and the Winter Sparrow, by author Alexis York Lumbard and illustrator Beatriz Martín Vidal, a Native American tale about why pine trees stay green all winter long and don’t lose their leaves like other trees. According to ancient legend, it was a simple act of kindness towards an injured little bird that earned pine trees this honor. Retold by award-winning author Alexis York Lumbard, this story invites readers to experience a world where trees and birds speak and interact with each other. It shows us that no act of kindness or sharing goes unrewarded. In conjunction with this story, students looked at the artwork of artist Charley Harper, a Cincinnati-based American Modernist best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters, and book illustrations. Students used a printed technique to create their pine bough, then collaged a Charley Harper-inspired sparrow to adorn it. The finishing touch was using a splatter technique to add some whimsical pearlescent snow! We are thrilled to showcase these works of art out in the community. Congratulations, second graders!
